A different geometry from individual sandbags
A mattress uses connected pockets or tubular compartments to distribute fill across an extended surface. The specified thickness, compartment spacing and junctions help define the installed shape. Individual containers and mattresses have different handling, filling and load-transfer arrangements; their specifications should remain distinct.
Potential duties include riverbank and canal protection, dune-toe works and erosion-control schemes where the designer selects a sand-filled geotextile system. Hydraulic stability, toe protection, undermining and edge transitions are resolved in the engineering design before fabrication dimensions are released.
Structural, filtration and surface layers
A two-layer construction can join a structural lower fabric with an upper fabric selected for the required filtration, protection and exposure behaviour. A three-layer design can introduce a separate filtration or surface-protection function. The manufacturing schedule identifies each layer, its orientation and its connection to the other layers.
Vegetation-supporting surface options can incorporate a suitable fibrous or textured face where the project requires establishment of a planted finish. The vegetation design must address growing medium, species, moisture, rooting and maintenance. The surface layer must remain compatible with the structural fabric and the hydraulic duty.
Factory seams and compartment controls
Fabrication drawings show panel width and length, compartment pattern, filling points, edge joints and field connections. Seam direction, thread and stitch construction are qualified for the selected fabrics and filling stresses. Different stretch behaviour between layers is considered at the junctions.
Dimensional checks verify compartment continuity and filling access before packing. Filling sequence, target thickness and permissible filling conditions are agreed with the installation method so that compartments develop the intended profile without excessive local seam loading.
Fines retention and drainage
Filter selection considers the proposed fill and the underlying soil where the mattress also performs a filtration role. Opening size, water flow and clogging behaviour are evaluated against the relevant material. A separate underfilter may be required by the design.
Representative material trials can help assess filling behaviour, drainage and retained shape. Project testing is defined for the proposed construction; a vegetation-capable surface does not replace structural, seam or filter-performance checks.
Manufacturing inspection and release
| Control area | Evidence defined in the project inspection plan |
|---|---|
| Fabric layers | Grade, orientation, opening characteristics and assigned structural or filtration function. |
| Factory assembly | Compartment dimensions, seam qualification, filling points and edge connections. |
| System interface | Approved thickness, fill, toe and edge details, underfilter and vegetation requirements. |
Applicable methods, sampling frequencies, acceptance limits and independent testing requirements are agreed for the supplied grade and manufacturing scope.
