Mining TSF & Water Dams

HDPE Geomembrane Lining for Mining TSFs, Process Water Dams & PCDs in Africa

Geosynthetics Africa supplies and installs HDPE geomembranes for critical mining containment applications across Africa. Our solutions meet GSE® international performance standards and follow IAGI-certified installation protocols for maximum safety, durability, and regulatory compliance.

HDPE is the dominant liner system used in mining for tailings storage, water management, and pollution control containment due to its high chemical resistance, long service life, and proven field performance.

1. Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs)

HDPE geomembranes form the primary environmental barrier in modern TSF construction.

Typical TSF lining systems supplied and installed by Geosynthetics Africa include:

  • 1.5mm–2.0mm HDPE primary liner

  • Nonwoven geotextile protection (300–800 gsm)

  • Leak detection geocomposites

  • HDPE pipe boots and penetrations

  • Anchor trench construction & detailing

  • Spark testing / holiday detection QA/QC

Applications within a TSF:

  • Basin lining

  • Embankment containment

  • Decant pond areas

  • Finger drains & underdrain systems

  • Return water channels

HDPE offers long-term UV stability, chemical resistance, and up to 50-year service in tailings environments.

2. Process Water Dams & Make-Up Water Reservoirs

Mining operations store significant volumes of process water, reagent water, and return water.
HDPE is the preferred containment liner for:

  • Process water dams

  • Clarified water ponds

  • Reagent make-up reservoirs

  • Fire water and emergency reservoirs

  • Plant runoff containment

Our solutions include:

  • 1.0–1.5mm HDPE liners

  • Geotextile underlays

  • Anchoring and perimeter trenching

  • Outlet/inlet structures and fittings

  • Full welding & seam QA/QC

3. Pollution Control Dams (PCDs)

PCDs require zero leakage tolerance, especially where hydrocarbons, workshop runoff, or chemically contaminated water may accumulate.

HDPE systems installed by Geosynthetics Africa include:

  • 2.0mm HDPE primary liner

  • Secondary containment options

  • Leak detection layers

  • Sumps & inspection points

  • Heavy-duty geotextile protection

These systems ensure full environmental compliance for mining operations.

4. Heap Leach Pads

For gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and rare-earth heap leaching:

  • Textured HDPE for slope stability

  • Chemical-resistant HDPE for aggressive leach solutions

  • Subgrade preparation & geotextile cushioning

  • Drainage geocomposites for solution extraction

HDPE liners are compatible with all leach chemistry including cyanide, sulfuric acid, and chloride solutions.

5. Leak Detection, QA/QC & Integrity Testing

To ensure quality and full containment, we provide:

  • Electric Leak Location (ELL) surveys

  • Spark/holiday detection

  • Vacuum box testing

  • Destructive seam sampling

  • Full documentation and as-built reports
