GSE HDPE QA Methodology – Applied on African Sites

1) Material Delivery, Identification & Traceability

Upon arrival on site, all GSE HDPE liner rolls are:

  • Logged against delivery documentation

  • Recorded by roll number and thickness

  • Inspected for transit damage

  • Entered into a controlled inventory register

Roll numbers are carried through panel placement logs, seam logs, test logs, repair logs and as-built drawings, ensuring full traceability for client, EPC and regulatory review.


2) Unloading, Storage & Handling Controls

Improper handling can permanently compromise liner performance before installation begins.

Geosynthetics Africa enforces:

  • Use of approved lifting equipment such as spreader bars, stingers or fabric straps

  • No dragging of rolls at any time

  • Storage on flat, dry and well-drained surfaces

  • Protection from sharp objects, heat sources and contamination

  • Controlled stacking heights to prevent roll deformation


3) Subgrade Preparation & Acceptance

Subgrade preparation is undertaken by the earthworks contractor, but formal acceptance is a QA hold point.

Before deployment, we verify that:

  • The surface is smooth, firm and free of sharp objects

  • No standing water or abrupt changes in level exist

  • Compaction and finish comply with project specification

  • Subgrade acceptance is signed off and recorded

Daily subgrade acceptance records form part of the permanent QA file.


4) Panel Deployment & Identification

During deployment:

  • Each panel is uniquely numbered

  • Roll number, deployment date and panel dimensions are recorded

  • Panels are clearly marked for visibility and traceability

  • Temporary ballast is applied to prevent wind uplift

  • Traffic on exposed liner is strictly controlled

Panel numbering conventions are agreed during pre-construction to maintain clarity across primary, secondary and tertiary liner systems.


5) Welding Equipment Qualification & Trial Welds

Before production welding:

  • Welding machines are warmed up and checked

  • Trial welds are performed at the start of each shift and after interruptions

  • Peel and shear testing is conducted on trial weld samples

  • Welding parameters such as temperature, speed and pressure are recorded

Production welding only proceeds once trial welds meet specified strength and bond criteria.


6) Field Seaming – Fusion & Extrusion Welding

Approved field welding methods include:

  • Dual-track fusion welding for primary seams

  • Extrusion welding for repairs, details and penetrations

Quality controls include:

  • Clean, dry and correctly aligned seam interfaces

  • Correct overlap geometry

  • Controlled welding speed and temperature

  • Continuous supervision and seam logging


7) Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

All field seams are tested over their full length using appropriate non-destructive methods, including:

  • Air pressure testing for dual-track fusion welds

  • Vacuum box testing for extrusion welds

  • Spark testing or liner integrity surveys where specified

Failed areas are isolated, repaired and re-tested until compliance is achieved.


8) Destructive Seam Testing

Destructive testing is undertaken at defined frequencies to verify seam strength:

  • Samples are removed from low-risk areas where possible

  • Peel and shear testing is carried out using calibrated equipment

  • Pass/fail criteria are strictly applied

  • Failed seam sections are capped or reconstructed

All destructive testing is logged and referenced in as-built documentation.


9) Defects, Repairs & Re-Testing

All defects — seam-related or otherwise — are:

  • Clearly identified and marked

  • Repaired using approved methods such as patching, capping or re-welding

  • Re-tested using non-destructive methods

  • Logged and verified prior to cover placement

No material is placed over the liner until final inspection and acceptance has been completed.


10) As-Built Documentation & Handover
